Selfies, a term typically used to describe a photograph of oneself, has become a ubiquitous part of our culture in recent years. Though the selfie has been around for centuries, it was not until the early 2010s that the selfie became popularized through social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat. In 2013, Oxford Dictionaries selected “selfie” as the word of the year.
As selfies have become more popular, so too have selfie museums. These museums are dedicated to exhibiting selfies and selfie-related art. The first selfie museum, The Museum of Selfies, opened in Los Angeles, California in early 2018. The museum’s exhibits include a selfie wall, a history of the selfie, and a photo booth.
Since the Museum of Selfies’ opening, other selfie museums have begun to pop up all over the world. In October 2018, the first selfie museum in Europe, The Museum of Selfies in Barcelona, Spain, opened its doors. The museum features exhibits on the history of the selfie, selfie art, and a selfie hall of fame.
In November 2018, the first selfie museum in Asia, The Museum of Selfies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, opened its doors. The museum has exhibits on the history of the selfie, selfie art, and a selfie hall of fame.
In December 2018, the first selfie museum in Africa, The Museum of Selfies in Cape Town, South Africa, opened its doors.
As the popularity of selfies continues to grow, it is likely that more and more selfie museums will open their doors.
